The 2015 Translacion of the Black Nazarene was again held successfully. However, two were dead while hundreds were injured.
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino announced that there are two casualties during the event with more than 400 injured.
“We had two casualties yesterday and today. The first one was before the procession started, and the last one prior to the arrival of andas within the vicinity of the Quiapo Church,” Tolentino said.
44-year-old Renato Gorion lost consciousness while atop of the carriage. It took them a few more minutes before he was brought down before of the number people wanting to climb the carriage. He was later brought to the hospital, but declared dead on arrival.
Gorion was a member of the Hijos del Nazareno — a group of devotees assisting the church during the feast of the Black Nazarene.
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) rushed another devotee to the Jose Reyes Medical Center where he was declared on arrival.
SPO4 Glenn Vallejo of the Manila Police District (MPD) said a man, who has not been identified, was found lying near the Quiapo Church with bruises and scratches all over his body. The man who is believed 25 to 30 years-old was wearing blue pants and a maroon shirt worn by Nazareno devotees.
The police suspected that the man collapsed during the stampede while the image of the Black Nazarene was being brought back to Quiapo.
There are also people who collapsed during the translacion while some suffered from cuts on their feet, especially those who are barefooted.
The PRC also said more than 1,500 people sought medical help during the event.
