Duterte Denies Having Cancer, But Admits He's Near Stage 1 Of This Disease

Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte lashed back at the veteran journalist after a Facebook post stating that the mayor is suffering from cancer.

Journalist Philip Lustre posted in his Facebook account that Mayor Rodrigo is suffering from throat cancer.

"Just yesterday, somebody leaked the information to me that Davao City Rodrigo Duterte has cancer of the throat. He was not playing close-open type of politics when he said he could not decide to run for the presidency in 2016. In fact, he was dead-sure he would not run for any post in 2016, but instead retire. His family is strongly against any presidential run for him because the nationwide political campaign would exacerbate his throat cancer," said Lustre.

In an interview with "Gikan sa Mara, Para sa Masa," Duterte clarified the rumors that he has cancer. However, he was honest enough to admit that he is indeed suffering from a medical condition involving his blood vessels, spines and esophagus.

He also noted that his condition was caused by smoking and bike accident.

"I said I have Buerger's… constriction of blood vessels because of nicotine… That's why I gave orders to stop smoking," said Duterte.

"I have Barrett's (esophagus). I'm nearing Stage 1, nearing lang… Then sinabi ng doctor ko kung hindi ako maghinto mag-inom, ma-stage 4 ka na… Well I want to drink because I love brandy,' Duterte added.

Last week, the Philippines was upset after the feisty mayor announced that he won't be running as president in the 2016 elections.

Some groups, however said it's too early to say and made moves in order to convince the mayor.

Mayor Duterte said his medical condition is not the reason why he decided not to run.
