A 24-year-old backpacker who suffered from persistent nosebleeds was horrified to discover they were caused by a three-inch-long leech which had been living up her nose for a month after Vietnam trip.
According to Daniela Liverani, she thinks that the persistent nosebleeds was only because of her recent motorbike accident, she must have bursted blood vessels.
But when she got back to the UK, Liverani noticed something in her nose. At first she thought it was just congealed blood and she tried blowing out. She only went to hospital after the leech crawled from her nose while she was having a shower.
"I tried to blow him out and grab him, but I couldn't get a grip of him before he retreated back up my nose. When I was in the shower, he would come right out as far as my bottom lip and I could see him sticking out the bottom of my nose. So when that happened, I jumped out of the shower to look really closely in the mirror and I saw ridges on him. That's when I realized he was an animal," Liverani said.
Doctors then used a torch, forceps and tweezers to remove the bloodsucker.
Miss said: 'It was agony - whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose.
"It was an agony," as Liverani described it. She could feel the leech tugging inside her nose. After half-an-hour the doctor had the leech in the tweezers as fat as the backpackers thumb and as long as her forefinger.
